The Subaru Impreza is a compact car that has been manufactured since 1992 by Subaru, introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the EJ and later the FA/FB series.

Currently in its fifth generation, Subaru has offered four-door sedan and five-door body variants since 1992; the firm also offered a coupe from 1995 until 2001, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction in the form of a hatchback. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models uprated with the addition of turbochargers.

At least one iteration of the Subaru Impreza appeared in every main Gran Turismo game to date.

Cafe Description (GT7)[]

This cafe description is specifically about the WRX models.

Many rally fans know about the Subaru WRX's stellar performance at the World Rally Championships (WRC). What is not so known is that the WRX takes its name from a Subaru car from the 1970s. I'm talking about the Leone RX, a passenger car that was introduced in 1970. It made its claim to fame in 1974 with an overall victory at the notoriously challenging Japan Alpine Rally. In later years, Subaru experienced remarkable success on the world rally stage. One famous car that resulted from its achievements was the first-generation Impreza WRX. Its name was contrived by "WR" that stood for "World Rally," and "RX," which referred to the legendary Leone.

The first-generation Impreza WRX was a small-but-tough car equipped with a mighty turbo engine and 4-wheel-drive. During the 1990s, it won several WRC championships, cementing its name in the annals of world rally history. This second-generation WRX, developed to carry on its predecessor's legacy, achieved its own rally successes. In addition to being the last Impreza to win a WRC drivers' championship in 2003, it pulled off a marvelous victory at the 2004 Rally Japan, the first WRC event to be held on Japanese soil.

In 2014, the WRX was reborn as the Subaru WRX, a new sports sedan which has competed in the world's most demanding races, including the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The WRX ranks at the top of every Subaru sports-car enthusiast, making this a splendid collection indeed.
