Super Formula, formerly known as Formula Nippon, is a type of formula racing and the top level of single-seater racing in Japan. Named Formula Nippon until 2013, the series evolved from the Japanese Formula 2000 series begun in 1973 by way of the Japanese Formula Two and Japanese Formula 3000 championships. For the most part, the Japanese racing series have closely followed their European counterparts in terms of technical regulations, but there have been some important exceptions.
Their first appearance in the series was in Gran Turismo Sport's Update 1.36.
Prior to the addition of the Super Formula cars in the series, Polyphony Digital designed the livery of the arting-Impul team in 2006 (when the series was named Formula Nippon); the car carries a "Concept by Gran Turismo" logo as a result.[1]
Due to the delayed start of the 2020 Super Formula season as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, the Japanese Automobile Federation (its sanctioning body) held a virtual race featuring Super Formula cars and drivers (including series legends) on May 17th, 2020; the event was aired live first on the Japanese pay TV channel J Sports, and was later streamed on tape delay on the Super Formula and The Race (official English broadcaster) YouTube channels on May 22.
According to Kazunori Yamauchi, the event is organized in a Sport Mode-style system.[2][3]
Super Formula also has a feeder series called Super Formula Lights, a rebranding of the Japanese Formula 3 Championship (the now-Formula Regional series in Japan is now promoted by K2 Planet, the organizers of the Super Taikyu series) based on the Euroformula Open Championship regulations.
Gran Turismo World Series winner Igor Fraga drove in Super Formula Lights in 2023, and after a season spent as a reserve driver, was promoted to the main Super Formula series for the 2025 season.
As part of Polyphony Digital's sponsorship of Fraga's real-world racing career, coverage of his Super Formula (and Super GT) races is a seasonal feature on Gran Turismo TV's YouTube channel.
