Description[]

After hitting the streets in 2001, Suzuki's GSX-R 1000 became Japan's top performance bike—a status reinforced by a complete redesign in 2003. But the following year, the other three major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers all released powerful competitive models. Suzuki took up the gauntlet and returned to the strategy of building the absolutely fastest bike on the racing scene. This strategy served Suzuki well in its 20 years of racing its GSX-R series bikes. With aggressively lightweight construction and a layout that further concentrates the bike's mass, Suzuki improved performance in all three areas: flat-out speed on the straights, cornering manoeuvrability, and stopping power. The culmination of this campaign was the 2005 GSX-R 1000.

Suzuki's purist approach for this bike is reflected in the choice of a conventional lower-right exhaust instead of the more popular under-seat type. The short, thick silencer is positioned near the motorcycle's center of gravity, and its triangular shape leaves plenty of room for full-lean cornering. This exhaust is more advantageous than an under-seat model in terms of weight and concentration of mass.

The performance of the GSX-R 1000 proves the success of Suzuki's orthodox approach. Despite having essentially the same engine as its predecessor, the new GSX-R 1000 has a slimmer, lighter chassis, for a tighter riding position and easier standing at red lights. The handling is so crisp that the rider feels one with the bike. The excellent manoeuvrability helps some riders win races and others enjoy invigorating rides on winding roads.

The machine cranks out a best-in-class power of 178 hp. But output is linear, not peaky, for less-stressful throttle response. From peak power at 11,100 r.p.m. until redlining at 13,500 r.p.m., acceleration is smooth. Even low to midrange power is the highest in its class but is still easy to control.

The GSX-R 1000 showed its considerable potential the 2005 Superbike World Championship. But this monster machine's ease of handling lets a rider with enough guts experience at least some of what a bike like this is capable of.
