Description[]
The GSX-R 600 first came out in 1997 as a scaled-down version of the twin-spar-framed 1996 GSX-R 750. After the 750 underwent a complete redesign for the 2000 season, the 600 was updated the following year and also joined by a third model—the 1000. The next full-scale redesign was in 2004; the current lineup is essentially those bikes.
The 2001 GSX-R 600 is structurally similar to the same season's GSX-R 1000, but the 2004 model has many components specially optimised for its 600cc displacement.
The extensive engine improvements include titanium valves positioned at narrow angles in the head, and a lower cylinder block made possible by conrods 3mm shorter. The entire chassis is more compact, with a sharper steering head angle, a frame made of a twin-spar closed-box main section for optimal stiffness, and a narrower intake system.
The actual riding position is also more compact, allowing aggressive weight-shifting during cornering. Torque is fat from the midrange to high revs, and acceleration at high speeds is also better. The redline moved up 1,000 r.p.m., to 15,500 r.p.m. The upshot is engine performance much more befitting a 600cc machine.
Yet the essence of the GSX-R 600's appeal isn't that its a scaled-up version of a lightweight machine. Rather, the bike allows the rider to enjoy "big machine" control. The no-nonsense handling requires a serious touch but permits experienced riders to execute high-precision manoeuvres. The engine gets more and more grunt as it approaches peak torque at 10,800 r.p.m., and keeps kicking out the power up to the peak at 13,000 r.p.m. Unlike other bikes, peak r.p.m. is easy to see coming, so that a skilled rider can make smart use of the bike's power at any speed. This is the performance that has drawn so many riders to the 600.
