Description[]
Suzuki released the GSX-R 750 in 1985 under the catchphrase "Born on the circuit and now returning to the circuit." Displacement limits had been lowered from 1,000cc to 750cc in the superbike world and in Formula One races, which allowed a wider range of modifications. The 750 is what Suzuki built in response.
Initially pairing an aluminium double-cradle frame and an air-and-oil cooled engine, the GSX-R 750 went through various technical changes, such as a liquid-cooled engine and a twin-tubular frame. For a full 18 years—from its release until engine size was upped to 1,000cc again in 2003—the 750 competed in races all over the world.
Once the bike completed its mission as a superbike competitor, fans worried that the GSX-R 750 might go out of production, but Suzuki decided to continue the R750 legacy in the form of a smaller but essentially identical twin, the GSX-R 600, which hit the streets in 2004. The R750 shares many similarities with the 600 but still has many features to differentiate this street machine from the racing-spec R600. Like the 600, the 750 has titanium valves, but they were put there not to increase engine speed but to reduce engine friction by reducing valve spring load. The swing arm and the rest of the frame are built for optimum balance of stiffness, and the internal structure of the tyres is designed with an emphasis on steering response.
On winding roads, the ample torque and gentle response of the GSX-R 750 let you ride it like a sports bike beyond 4,500 r.p.m. The torque gets even fatter at 8,000 r.p.m. and keeps right on strengthening until peaking at 10,800 r.p.m. But gentle as the torque increases may be, the engine still cranks out 148 hp—making this the most powerful 750 ever. Although the 750 may no longer rule the racetrack, this is the fastest pup of the litter.
