Description[]
With striking styling modelled after a Japanese katana (samurai sword), the GSX1100 Katana rocked the motorcycle world when it first came out in the fall of 1980, and was a hot seller for years afterwards. For the last year of production, 2000—also the 80th anniversary of Suzuki's founding—the bike builder made 1,100 units of a final-edition model.
The first Katana was fitted with a specially tuned version of the GSX 1100E's air-cooled, inline-4- cylinder 1,074cc engine—the first Suzuki with dual overhead cams and 4 valves per cylinder. The frame had a typical double-cradle construction. The front suspension kit included a matching pair of the anti-dive mechanisms that were widely used on road-racing bikes in those days. The combination of rim sizes was one not seen often today: 19 inches in the front and 17 in the rear.
In 1982 a GSX750S Katana was made to satisfy Japanese racing rules—which prohibited windscreens and clip-on handlebars and specified production bikes of 750cc or greater. This model was also so well-received it eventually branched off and evolved separately from its big brother.
The Katana Final Edition has its serial number prominently displayed on its all-black upper bracket. Painted parts also have a luxurious-looking clear glossy coating applied. Other refinements to this ultimate Katana include bolt-on footpeg mountings, improved braking, and tubeless tyres.
The long, 5.2 gallon fuel tank (export models received a 5.8 gallon tank until 1992), low clip-on type handlebars, and footpegs are positioned for a forward-leaning riding position that's a perfect fit with the Katana's sleek profile. Although the engine doesn't compare well with those of today, the bike still has plenty of road-hugging grip and a powerful feel to it. With the large 19-inch front wheel, the bike's handling has an Eighties retro feel.
The sight of an elegantly leaning Katana slicing through a corner brings to mind perfectly the image of a samurai sword slicing through an unlucky opponent.....
