Description[]

Making its flashy debut in 1999, the GSX 1300R Hayabusa had unique, curvy styling and massive power specs befitting a bike that Suzuki built to be crowned the worlds fastest.

The engine is a liquid-cooled 4-cylinder, 4-valve, 1,299cc unit with dual overhead cams and a side-mounted cam chain. That, plus SCEM-(Suzuki Composite Electro-chemical Material-) lined cylinders, a two-stage fuel injection system, SRAD (Suzuki Ram Air Direct) technology, and other high-tech components made the Hayabusa the most powerful production bike in its day.

The aluminium twin-spar frame was designed with superior aerodynamics and with a steering head to eliminate unnecessary pitching. Even the low 32-inch seat reflected Suzuki's "speed first" design philosophy. The inverted fork had 43-mm inner tubes. Like supersport bikes, the 'Busa had fully adjustable suspension in the front and rear. The rear suspension was bottom-link.

The rubber-mounted handlebars reduced vibration to the hands, for greater comfort. The catalytic converter in the muffler reduced exhaust emissions. This was a machine that offered both environmental responsibility and exceptional rideability.

In response to regulatory changes allowing a maximum possible speed of 180 mph, Suzuki made suspension and other changes in the new models that make the 'Busa more fun to ride, including allowing the rider greater lean angles to work with. When leaning, the bike's behaviour is easy to predict throughout the turn, and front and rear traction is easier to monitor.

Also easier to monitor is tyre slippage during braking. Changes to the onboard computer improve rideability, taking the Hayabusa even closer to the territory of lightweight supersport machines.

This machine still generates the world's best acceleration, so any rider contemplating getting on one should have solid riding skills and a thorough understanding of bike physics. This 'Busa's paint job—in "metallic fantasy grey" —somehow matches the monstrous potential that lurks beneath.[1]
