Description[]
Powered by a 1,401cc oil-cooled dual-overhead-cam engine with 4 cylinders and 4 valves per cylinder, the GSX 1400 was the biggest, baddest naked production bike on the streets when it rolled off the assembly line in '01. The 1400 has power from the instant the throttle opens, and the vibration generated during acceleration has the one-of-a-kind smoothness of an oil-cooled engine. Riders were amazed at the enhanced comfort of its vibration characteristics. They announced the arrival of a new, exciting age in naked bikes. But that's not all. Tne GSX 1400 had the serious equipment for the most demanding riding conditions, including a 34mm throttle-body electronic fuel injection system, the first on a naked bike, forged-steel pistons, an oil cooling fan, and coated cylinders for superior heat-dissipation properties and durability.
Straddle the GSX 1400 and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the low, slim seat and the compact riding position. But the footpegs are low enough to avoid knee fatigue on long rides—a nice touch.
The six-speed transmission—the first in this bike's class—is amazingly easy to shift, for supremely easy riding. The upright position exposes the rider fully to the wind, which on the open road is a thrill indeed. But this bike also has the flexibility for street riding, too.
The handling is solid and the steering response is like that of a smaller, lighter machine. The bike turns far easier and far more nimbly than the competition, making full-lean turns a possibility. With exquisitely balanced stiffness, the suspension and the rest of the chassis absorb the effects of poor roads at high speeds. The brakes have a light touch and are easy to lock. In short, this bike is easy for even beginners to ride but also has the performance to satisfy advanced riders.
Changes for the 2005 season include a single exhaust for lighter weight, optimised ignition mapping, and a redesigned fuel-injection system, evolving the 1400 into an even sharper-accelerating, more powerful naked machine.
