Suzuki introduced its new Kei in October 1998, which, as the name suggests, was yet another kei car from the company from Hamamatsu, Japan. It produced a souped-up version in November 2002 called the Kei Works, The name "Works" came to suggest performance for Suzuki, as seen in the popular Alto Works, and just as in the Alto Works, the Kei Works had plenty of upgrades from the base model.
What made the Kei Works stick out was its radical exterior styling, highlighted by a hood scoop, a larger grille, a flashy rear spoiler and oversized fog lights. The vehicle rode on large 15-in. alloy wheels. The sporty theme continued inside the cabin where the bucket seats developed in collaboration with Recaro took the spotlight.
The engine was equally sporty, consisting of a turbocharged 658 cc DOHC inline-3 that produced 63 BHP and 78.1 lb-ft of torque. It came mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The Kei Works came in either FF (Front-engine, Front Drive) or all-wheel drive. Once the Kei got going, the vehicle's taut suspension ensured good handling. It consisted of struts up front and isolated trailing links at rear. Despite its relatively tall nature, the Kei Works behaved more like a mini sports car than a crossover wagon, which made it popular to young enthusiasts.
