Description[]

Suzuki released the RG250 Gamma in 1983, when an unprecedented motorcycle boom was just getting underway in Japan. The fire was lit in 1980 by Yamaha, whose RZ250 introduced young people to the excitement of motorcycles and started the decline of the "family bike" boom that began in the late '70s.

Released at such an important juncture, the RG250 Gamma had a major impact on the motorcycle world. Here was a machine built like no other mass-market bike. This machine borrowed not just the "Gamma" name trom the RG Gamma—built for Suzuki's racing division—but also the latest in motorcycle technology, as well. The chassis was constructed like a racer in many ways, and was equipped with only the bare minimum of safety components needed to be street-legal.

The aluminium frame—the first in a production bike—weighed only 16.75 lbs. The frame was also hand-welded because of the complex welds required and because automated welding robots were not yet advanced enough for the job. Mounted in the front was a 16-inch rim, the size Suzuki was just beginning to use for its racing-division bikes. The fork was equipped with an anti-dive feature. Full floating suspension was installed in the rear. Riders were enthralled by these and other racing features, such as a rear brake torque rod made of aluminium, an aircraft-style fuel cap, and, set in the aluminium-stayed plastic instrument panel, a tachometer that started at 3,000 r.p.m.

The newly designed liquid-cooled parallel twin engine cranked out 45 hp—the limit on Japanese motorcycles in those days. The weak low- to midrange torque makes the bike seem somewhat out of date today, but the sharp high r.p.m. acceleration is still exciting. The rider doesn't have to lean too far forward but does have to reach for the clip-ons. The result is a racer's-eye view of the road. After all, the Gamma is the bike that paved the way for other models to get their race on. This, in turn, is what led to the replica boom of the late Eighties.
