Description[]

Suzuki returned to the World Grand Prix 500 class in 1974 with the RG500, fitted with a water-cooled, two-stroke engine with rotary disc valves and four cylinders arranged in a square configuration. The RG500 won its first victory in '75. Starting the following year, it won the constructors' title seven years in a row, along with four rider's titles, exhibiting amazing speed and stability in the World GP500 class.

Incorporating the technology of the RG500 was 1984's RG500 Gamma, a street-legal racer that continued to evolve into the even more refined RGA, RGB, and RG Gamma. Needless to say, each model included a liberal infusion of Suzuki's racing technology.

This bike's centrepiece is, of course, the engine, with not only the same displacement but even the same bore/stroke specs (56 x 50.6mm) and bore centers as the racing version of the RG Gamma. Although other manufacturers at the time were giving their GP replicas crankcase reed intake valves, Suzuki opted for the same rotary disc valves as the racing model. Also borrowed from the racing model was the crankcase shape, SAEC (Suzuki Automatic Exhaust Control) technology for the exhaust valves, and a cassette transmission. The resulting maximum power was 95 hp at 9,500 r.p.m.

Designed to be lightweight, compact, and rigid, the frame weighed in at an amazingly light 20 lbs, although it was slightly longer than its racing equivalent. This played a big part in keeping the bike's dry weight down to an ultralight 340 Ibs, for a racing-worthy 3.6 lbs per horsepower power-to-weight ratio.

With its stunning engine performance, nimble handling, and awesome acceleration, the RG500 Gamma won legions of fans. Although it yielded its star status in the World Grand Prix to the V-engine-fitted RGV500 Gamma in 1987, the RG500 Gamma still seems fresh and innovative today.
