Description[]

The Skywave 650 was the world's largest-displacement scooter when it appeared in 2002. The first two-wheeled vehicle equipped with an electronically-controlled continuously-variable transmission with manual mode, the 650 has a liquid-cooled, 2-cylinder, 4-valve dual-overhead-cam 638cc engine that cranks out highly respectable power.

The engine is rigidly mounted almost exactly in the middle of the chassis to satisfy design requirements related to unsprung weight, suspension travel, and front-wheel laod. A gear train was chosen to transmit power to the rear wheel because of its high reliability and good maintainability.

The 15- and 14-inch tyres in the front and rear aren't just larger to match the powerful engine. They're also the first radial tyres mounted on a scooter and assure plenty of grip.

The 650 may be big, but its ride is zippy thanks to the fat torque that's possible with 638cc of displacement. The engine's normal mode generates enough power for normal riding, but for winding roads and other situations calling for more torque and engine braking, the power mode is best. Since the manual mode enables sporty, motorcycle-like riding, the power mode seems like almost too much power and delivers sportbike-like speed.

The combined-action brakes include an antilock braking system—and that's a good thing, because the 650 can travel at very un-scooter-like high speeds. Yet because of the rigid frame, it rides smoothly, like a touring bike, on the motorway and can also be manoeuvred with precision on winding roads.

The 650 is also practical, with a low, 29.5-inch seat, tight turning radius, and such top-of-the-line conveniences as a cargo compartment under the seat that's roomy enough for a large briefcase.

Upgrades for the 2005 season include a six-speed transmission with 5 manual speeds and an overdrive mode. The chassis was also lightened so that the wheel can be turned with a lighter touch. A fuel-efficiency gauge and outside temperature gauge were added to the instrument panel, and the bike also received an engine immobiliser, for enhanced theft protection.
