A license test fail is a failure message that appears in all Gran Turismo games with the exception of Gran Turismo HD Concept.

Failure conditions[]

The possible failure conditions are:

  • Going out of the course.
  • Overshooting the goal area when told to stop in there.
  • Colliding with an obstacle such as a cone (except in Coffee Breaks which require to smash them).
  • Colliding with a barrier.
  • Colliding with an opponent car (GT5 and onwards).
  • Failing to achieve the target time or position required to obtain the bronze trophy.
  • Overtaking or colliding the pace car during Guide Run licenses (GT4 only).
  • Falling off the bike (Tourist Trophy only).
  • False Starting the Race (GT7 Drag Race Missions only)

Gran Turismo 1[]

When a license test is failed, the camera rotates around the car and the "Fail" message appears along with the time reached by the player in case the player fails to beat the target time required for bronze. In the Japanese version if the player fails, it shows the message "You failed" and the screen where the player wins a license shows the "FAILED" message in flashing red.

Gran Turismo 2[]

When a license test is failed, the theme when completing a race or license plays, and the "FAIL" text appears in red. Above the "FAIL" text it appears another orange text that it says "Out of Course" if the player exits the road or "Crash!" if the player crashes into a barrier in force. Alternatively if the player fails to achieve the time required to obtain the bronze trophy, a timer set by player appears in red along with the screen blanking a bit.

Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec and Gran Turismo Concept[]

When a license test is failed, the screen darkens and the "FAIL" text appears in yellow. Alternatively if the players fails to complete the license in time required for bronze, the "TIME EXPIRED" text appears.

This message is also shown if the player goes off-track in the Time Attack mode, or ignores instructions to stop during the pod Race.

Gran Turismo 4 Prologue[]

When a license is failed, the screen turns in orange tone, the camera rotates around the car; but in an aerial view, and the "FAIL" text appears falling down and then it switches to the options "Retry" and "Exit".

Gran Turismo 4[]

When a license test is failed, the song "Oh Yeah" by Yello plays and the game screen goes to a squared screen from the left and draining the colors along with a "FAIL" text. It uses the same view in the previous game.

Tourist Trophy[]

The same fail screen from GT4 is used, but a short, original composition is used instead as the failure music.

Gran Turismo PSP[]

When a license test is failed, like in Gran Turismo 4 the screen goes centered to a square and the "Failed" text appears above the image.

In other regional versions, the text appears above the image says "Challenge Failed..."

Gran Turismo 5[]

When a license test is failed as well as some special event like the Jeff Gordon NASCAR School, the Top Gear Test Track Special Event or some Grand Tour events, the screen goes obscuring and the "Disqualified" text on yellow appears.

Gran Turismo 6[]

When a license test is failed as well as some events like the GT Academy or Ayrton Senna Tribute, the "Disqualified" text on yellow appears like in GT5, but the screen doesn't obscure completely and some text below the "Disqualified" text appears depending how you failed like going out of the track, bumping into obstacles or cars. Alternatively if you fail to achieve the time required for bronze, it only shows the "Time's Up!" text appears below in the time reached by the player.

Gran Turismo Sport[]

When a Driving School, Mission Challenge or Circuit Experience event is failed, the screen goes centered to a square like in GTPSP, but at this time, the "Failed" text appears in the game screen and below the "Failed" text appears some text depending how you failed the challenge; thus, failure of a Driving School, Mission Challenge, or Circuit Experience event is treated as the game's equivalent to license test failures.

The failure music is reused from GT5's tuning shop music.

Gran Turismo 7[]

Whenever the player fails a license, Mission Challenge or a Circuit Experience test, like in GTPSP and GT Sport, the screen goes centered to a square and a stamp "TRY AGAIN!" in red appears in the game screen as well as the reason why the player failed (going out of the track or colliding into a wall).

If the player fails numerous times in one test, it will prompt the license instructor (or Sarah in the Mission Challenge or Circuit Experience) advising the player to watch the demonstration or consider taking a break before trying the test again.
