"The vision of Tommykaira, the ZZ-S is a distinctly styled hand-made sports car."
―In-game catch text for the car, from GT6's Dealership

The Tommykaira ZZ-S '00 is a road car produced by Tommykaira. It first appeared in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, replacing the older model from Gran Turismo 2, and has been featured in all subsequent mainline games up to Gran Turismo 6.

In-game description[]

In July 1995, Tommykaira released the ZZ, a handmade sports car of its own design.

The ZZ chassis combined a bathtub aluminium monocoque body with steel-tube frames, making it quite similar to a race car. The undercarriage employed double-wishbone suspension directly mounted to the steel-tube frames both front and rear. The vehicle length is about 11.8 ft, and the width exceeds 5.5 ft on account of the wide tyres. These proportions were also in line with that of a race car.

The engine was tuned in-house by Tommykaira itself, with improvements to Nissan's carburetted SR20DE powerplant yielding a maxmimum output of 178 BHP at 6,900 rpm with 141.8 lb-ft maximum torque at 4,900 rpm. The engine was mid-mounted behind the seats in a transverse layout, and the rod-type shift linkage extending from the engine was also very race-car-like. The body, made of fibre-reinforced plastic, was designed by Takuya Yura.

The ZZ was a very simple car, lacking even side windows, but its direct driving feel made it popular nonetheless, and its performance numbers turned heads even in Europe. Later, a hardtop model was added to improve everyday usability, and in 2000 the highly tuned ZZ-S model was released.

The ZZ-S had an even more finely-tuned SR20DE engine, boosting power up to 192 BHP at 7,300 rpm with 144.9 lb-ft maximum torque at 6,400 rpm.

Since the vehicle weighed only about 700 kg, its performance was astonishing, and on winding roads it could compete on the same level as large-displacement sports cars. Sadly, the ZZ-S is no longer produced.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being labeled as the 2000 model, its specifications are directly taken from the early model except for weight, which is taken from the early non-coupe ZZ.
    • The new model's price was reflected in GT3, but it got reverted to the early model's one in GT4.
  • This car also appears in Gran Turismo Concept, albeit unplayable through normal means; it can only be seen as a CPU car in the races.
