The Corolla Runx/Allex, which came out in 2001, was a hatchback model of the Corolla that had been renewed in the previous year. The Corolla had undergone a full model change in order to shake itself from the image of being a car for older drivers, due to the increasing age of their long time customers. The Runx and Allex were cars that would further promote this rejuvenation of the brand by attracting younger customers.
Stylistically, the Runx was similar to the Corolla with the NCV (New Century Value) emblem and honeycomb grill. The Allex had an A motif emblem from its name and a stylish horizontal grill for its front facia. The look of both versions became similar in the minor change of 2004, but this basic design feature has not changed.
The engine was a 1.5L or a 1.8L, and the mainstream transmission type is the 4-speed AT. However, the sports Z-grade powered by the 2ZZ-GE engine producing 187 BHP and 133.1 lb-ft of torque can be combined with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Runx and Allex both give off an aura of a European premium hatch, but the 1.8Z and 1.8Z Aero Tourer version are true European hot hatches when driven as well. The 2ZZ-GE engine equipped with the VVTL-i variable valve timing and a lift mechanism clearly sounds and feels different after 6,000 rpm, and the acceleration is exhilarating.
The Runx and Allex were sold under the Corolla moniker in Europe, and they were an extremely important part of Toyota's global marketing strategy.
