"Four consecutive wins at Le Mans for Toyota with this prototype race car"

Toyota Gazoo Racing won two World Endurance Championships in a row starting in 2018, and it took three straight overall titles at Le Mans with the LMP1-class TS050 - Hybrid. In 2021, a new LMH category was added that represented the top class, so Toyota developed the GR010 HYBRID to compete in this division.

Because it was all new, the GR010 represented a big change from the TS050, most notably the powertrain. The engine went from a 493 HP twin-turbo 2.4-liter V-6 to a 670.6 HP twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6. Also, the 493 HP front and rear-wheel electric motors were swapped for a 268.2 HP system that powered the front wheels only. This resulted in a 4-wheel drive system where the front wheels were exclusively powered by the electric motors, while rears were driven by the gasoline engine.

Car No. 7 was driven by the team of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez, while the No. 8 car was piloted by Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley. This season saw Toyota take their fourth Le Mans title (and four in a row) in the new hypercar division.

Brand Central[]

This GR010 HYBRID represented Toyota's entry for the 2021 World Endurance Championship. The 2021 season saw the introduction of a Hypercar category in the WEC. This top-tier class succeeded the LMP1 category. The GR010 HYBRID was built specifically for the Hypercar class. Driven by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José Maria López, the No. 7 car won the fourth round of the 2021 WEC event at Le Mans. Incredibly, it was its fourth straight victory at Le Mans, beginning in 2018.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first Le Mans Hypercar to be featured in the series.
    • Furthermore, this is also the first Le Mans-winning Hypercar, and also, currently the most successful Hypercar in active competition.
    • This car won Le Mans for the second time in 2022, albeit with the #8 car driven by Sebastien Buemi, Ryo Hirakawa and Brendon Hartley. This also marks Toyota's fifth Le Mans victory, and that the car won the FIA WEC season overall (both in drivers and manufacturers' championships) in 2021 and 2022.
    • However, the car's (and Toyota's) Le Mans-winning streak came to an end when it finished in second place during the 2023 edition, where it lost to the Ferrari 499P, with the second GR010 (#7) earning a DNF due to both a crash and a mechanical failure. However, it still remains the manufacter championship-winning car of the FIA WEC for four years in a row, although it has no longer been the drivers championship-winning car, being beaten by the #6 car of Porsche Penske Motorsport in 2024.
    • The 2023 #8 livery is the championship-winning car of the 2023 season, although the livery in-game was added before the sakura decals have been added to the actual car.
  • Despite Le Mans Hypercars being cheaper to develop than LMP1s and previous prototype regulations, it is priced at 3,000,000 credits, due to the fact that it was a Le Mans-winning car, which adds to its historic value, similar to the Audi R18 TDI '11 and the Porsche 919 Hybrid '16, both of which are Gr.1 models sold in Brand Central that were also Le Mans winners.
  • Despite featuring a hybrid drivetrain, it is missing the "Hybrid Car" tag until version 1.26.
  • The car's chassis tag sticker, located inside the car's interior, depends on the car's number at the time of purchase.
  • For the 2023 Olympic Esports Series qualifiers, finals, and replica event race, a specially liveried version (internally a separate instance to the regular car) of the car was used, featuring a carbon fiber paint color, Bridgestone tire stickers (as Bridgestone is an official Olympics partner, much like Toyota) and a manually installed car number (#7). This version of the car is not available outside of the related events, similar to the GT Academy versions of certain Nissan cars in the PlayStation 3-era games.
    • Due to the Olympics policy regarding outside commercial branding, the player was forced to wear unbranded versions of the Puma No. 1 suit and Arai carbon helmet during the aforementioned events. A similar suit combination would later be used for the AFEELA Prototype 2024.
  • Due to the way the number box is placed on the 2023 livery version, using that livery in a Sport Mode race that places mandatory number boxes will cause the car to appear with two number boxes. A similar issue can be found with the Gran Turismo movie version of the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 '18 and the Anest Iwata variation livery of the Lexus RC F GT3 '17.
