Car Index (GT7)[]

"This version of Japan's signature lightweight sports car boasts a bigger engine, but it remains true of its heritage."

Since its introduction in 2012, more than 200,000 units of the Toyota 86 were sold around the world, solidifying its place in the history books as one of the most popular front-engine/rear-wheel-drive compact sports cars of all time.

Nine years after the 86's debut, Toyota introduced the GR86, a high-performance version of the car that wore the Gazoo Racing badge (GR). While maintaining the virtues of the original car, namely a lightweight body and superb handling, Toyota engineers equipped the GR86 with a larger engine. Under the hood was a 2.4-litre flat-4 that replaced the 2.0-litre variant. Power came in at an impressive 231 BHP / 7,000 rpm with a maximum torque peaking at 25.5 kgfm / 3,700 rpm. This translated to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 6.3 seconds, which was a stark improvement over the 7.4 seconds of the first-generation model.

To enhance the 86's handling, the company's chassis engineers stiffened the body and adopted aluminum in the roof panel to lower the center of gravity, as well as reduce overall height. With the GR86, Toyota offered sports-car enthusiasts exactly what they were hoping for with the 86: a meaner, faster version of the car that was designed for the race track.

Brand Central (GT7)[]

This GR 86 represents an evolved version of the Toyota 86 rear-wheel-drive sports car. Continuing the tradition established by the original AE86, this latest "hachi-roku" is compact and has an FR layout. What's new is the 2.4-liter flat-four engine. With an extra 400 cc of displacement, it delivers more power and torque than ever before. And, let me remind you that the new 86's body structure has been significantly stiffened, so when you're tackling a winding road, you'll really feel as if you're one with the car!

Trivia[]

  • At 8,600 Credits, it is the cheapest car in GT Sport, beating the previous recordholder, the Gran Turismo RACING KART 125 Shifter, which was priced at 10,000 Credits.
    • While assumed to be a mistake, the pricing is deliberate because of Toyota's announcement pricing it at 860,000 Credits (for the Japanese version, as prices are multiplied by 100 due to yen pegging in those versions).[4]
      • Additionally, the GR86 is the last car to be added in GT Sport's content update lifecycle.
  • In GT7, if a custom rear wing is applied from GT Auto, only the end plates of the wing will appear in the shadows during gameplay, however entering photo mode in the replay will show the shadows as normal. The bug has yet to be fixed.
