In-game description[]

This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:

Although it evolved to a fifth model, the MR2 reached chassis maturity at model 4, when the last major changes were made. The turbo GT-S is technically a model 5 but offers roughly the same performance as the model 4 version; changes are limited to those in design; an adjustable rear wing, small spats under the front fender, and aluminium wheels. The biggest changes in the model 5 were made in the GT-Limited, a naturally-aspirated model. From the time it debuted, the MR2 was known as the car whose chassis could not keep up with improvements in engine power. But because the MR2 was designed originally for turbo units, a non-turbo engine didn't push the chassis limits. And because the naturally-aspirated engine changed very little as the chassis continued to evolve, such MR2s improved with time. The model 5's standard engine features the VVT-i variable air intake system to generate 197 BHP, and achieves exquisite balance between engine and chassis, permitting the driver to enjoy sports car-like excitement safely. But even better than this engine's maximum power is its sizable torque in the mid-rpm range (2,000 to 5,000 rpm), vastly improving throttle control going into turns. In fact, the non-turbo model 5 can even be considered the best of all the MR2 SW models.
