In-game description[]
This description is taken from the NTSC version of Gran Turismo 2:
The EP71, a third-generation Starlet, proved popular as a basic car with excellent driving performance. When the EP71 debuted in October 1984, the status of sportiest version went to the Si, furnished with a 1.3-liter SOHC in-line 4-cylinder 12-valve engine. This status was subsequently transferred to a turbocharged model that was added to the lineup in January 1986. This is a truly energetic sports hatchback worthy of its unofficial nickname of "Speedy". By adding an intercooled turbo to the Si power unit, this car could now crank out 104 BHP at maximum output (23 BHP more than the non-turbo model) and a maximum torque of 110 lb-ft. With its renowned compact and lightweight body, the Starlet already had more-than-impressive specs, but the EP71 Turbo became a veritable bucking bronco by combining a powerful turbo charger with the same suspension as the non-turbocharged Si. In short, the engine completely outstripped the suspension. However, a minor change in January 1987 boosted power and torque to 108 and 111 lb-ft while also upgrading the suspension, for somewhat less-unwieldy handling. Thus the EP71 became an even peppier hatchback than its predecessors.
