The Starlet, which debuted as a sister model to the Publica in 1973, enjoyed popularity for a long time as Toyota's entry model. In 1995 the Starlet underwent a full redesign into its 5th-generation.
The model range options for the 5th-generation Starlet were the base Reflect and the sporty Glanza. The Reflect was available in 4- and 5-door bodies with either a 1.3L petrol or a 1.5L diesel engine. The Glanza, meanwhile, was only available as a 3-door with the same 1.3L petrol engine as the Reflect, with or without a turbocharger. The naturally-aspirated version was called the Glanza S, and the turbo version the Glanza V.
The model focused on driving performance was naturally the Glanza V. This model was the successor to the previous-generation Starlet GT grade model, and boasted extreme performance. The 4E-FTE 1.3L straight-4 had a maximum output of 133 BHP with 115.7 lb-ft maximum torque, offering speed that made fools of low-end sports cars. Because it was so overly fast, it was equipped with a "low mode" switch as in the previous-generation GT.
Supporting the car was a suspension with struts in the front and a twist-beam set-up in the rear, the same as in the previous generation. However, it was given a viscous limited slip differential in the front, and the rear suspension attachment point was reinforced with a performance rod, in order to give it better traction.
The Glanza V made a name for itself as a "hot hatch", but in 1998 Toyota introduced its new-generation compact, the Vitz. With this, the curtain closed on the Starlet car and name.
