In view of the popularity of the high-performance pickup market in the US at the beginning of the 21st century, Toyota Motor North America served up the new Tacoma X-Runner as their latest weapon in their effort to target this growing vehicle class. The truck was essentially a Tacoma mid-sized pickup tuned to high-performance specifications.
The basic design consisted of a short-bed extended cab with a rear access door. It was a pickup truck all right, but an exterior covered with aerodynamic aids, a ride height significantly lower than the standard model's, and 45-ratio tyres on 18" wheels all contributed to a very imposing visual presence.
The engine chosen was a 4.0-litre V6 that was capable of producing 246 BHP. But this engine was also offered with an optional supercharger developed by TRD USA, and with the supercharger equipped, the engine's maximum output jumped up to 296 BHP.
The tuning of the underbody was also extremely well-executed. The suspension had been custom-tuned and given Bilstein dampers, a 6-speed manual transmission was equipped as standard, and the rear end was given a reinforced limited-slip differential.
All these upgrades resulted in the felicitous pairing of a 296 BHP supercharged engine with a superior-handling suspension. Just looking at the specifications, it is difficult to believe that this kind of performance comes from a pickup. American pickups are without a doubt utility vehicles, but it has to be said that they have recently added a new "sports pickup" subcategory to their ranks.
