The Toyota au CERUMO Supra '01 is a race car produced by Toyota. It first appeared in Gran Turismo Concept and has been featured in all subsequent mainline games up to Gran Turismo 6.

The car appears to be the #38 driven by Yuji Tachikawa and Hironori Takeuchi, who won the GT500 Driver's Championship in the 2001 JGTC season despite winning no races, marking the second consecutive season where such an occurrence happened.

In-game description[]

"This JGTC machine won the series championship by strategically utilizing the weight handicap system."

In 2001, Hironori Takeuchi and Yuji Tachikawa and their au CERUMO Supra took the Driver's Championship in the Japan Grand Touring Car Championships (JGTC). In 2000, JGTC rules were changed to disallow ABS, and restricting ground effects. This led to an overall drop in the performance of the race cars. As a countermeasure, CERUMO decided to focus on increasing the handling and made the strategic choice to employ a softer compound tire than its rivals. At the same time, special attention was paid to the weight penalty system. In the JGTC, top finishers are "penalized" with extra weight for the remaining races, this is done to even the playing field.

Armed with its exceptional handling, the au CERUMO Supra could have won several races right off the bat. However, the team's aim was the overall series championships, something it had never won before. As Takeuchi and Tachikawa went into the final race. Team au CERUMO had built up their point title by strategically placing 2nd twice, 3rd once, and 4th once, to keep the weight penalties to a minimum while racking points. The Supra was sent to the back of the pack after a bad start, banishing any hope of victory. However, the Mugen NSX, which had been battling for the title, retired, and Takeuchi and Tachikawa walked into the lead. The CERUMO Supra had taken the series championship without winning a single race.
