Trade, also called Share & Trade in GTPSP and Gift in GT5, is a function that allows players to obtain cars (and in Gran Turismo 5, various other items) between players.
Gran Turismo 1-4[]
Trading in the first four numbered games involves memory cards, and allows players to buy a car stored on a save data stored in another memory card located in slot 2 (in GT2 and GT3, it is also possible to buy cars from memory card in slot 1). Trading is done from the Trade option in the My Home in GT/Simulation Mode, except in GT2, where it is located in the Data Transfer menu within the title screen (meaning it is possible to trade cars even from Arcade Mode disc). Like buying a regular car, buying cars using this method costs the player credits; when a car is tuned, the costs of parts (including Racing Modifications in GT1 and GT2) are added to the base car price. In GT4, where car prices are instead determined by the car's mileage, for cars that have no selling value and can only be removed from the garage, the game imposes an universal trade-in price of Cr. 200,000 for them. Additionally, tuning parts are no longer carried when the player purchases the car.
The trade function can also be used to just view the contents of a memory card's garage data, either the player's own or another memory card's data. In most games, it can also be exploited to duplicate the player's own cars, especially in GT2 and GT3 where trading can be done from any memory card slot, as well to rebuy cars the player may have accidentally sold, assuming the game have not been saved following the sale (in GT4, the game saves automatically when a car is sold to prevent this).
Memory card trades can also be done to obtain hidden/unused cars semi-legitimately in both GT2 and GT3 (as well as the two Arcade Mode only cars in international versions of GT1). However, in GT3, three hidden cars, the Porsche 911 GT3 (996) '01, Lancia STRATOS '73, and Lancia STRATOS Rally Car '77, cannot be purchased using the trade feature, as they are flagged as not for sale.[1] Conversely, in GT1, it is possible to buy the Dodge Concept Car (obtained from B License all-gold prize) for free due to lack of sale price (in order to prevent the car from being bought from the Dodge dealership), but the car cannot be removed once obtained because of this.
Note that in order to perform trades, the save data the player wants to buy the cars from must have the same region as the player's current game data.

Wash in progress... This page has the following things needed to be documented: Test how GTPSP car trading/sharing works, and see if this section is correct. You can help by editing the page. Be sure to remove the template when the to-do is finished. |
- See also Category:GTPSP Shareable cars and Category:GTPSP Tradeable cars for a list of cars bearing each trade type.
Trading in GTPSP involves wireless (Wi-Fi) ad-hoc networking, and can be done from the Share & Trade menu within the Multiplayer menu. Each car has a status if it can be shared or traded, visible in the Car Details screen or in the dealership (SP Model cars are neither shareable nor tradeable; there are also no cars that can be both shared and traded in the game).
For cars marked as Shareable, cars can be shared by using Send Car feature, with the recipient choosing Receive Car in said menu. This action sends all shareable cars not owned by the other player to them; in return, the other player can also get cars they don't yet own from the player. This way, sharing only a single car is not possible. Consider the following situation:
In the above situation, when the sharing is confirmed, player 2 will receive the Vibe, the RX-7 and the Corolla, and when the reverse-sharing prompt is answered, player 1 receives the 120i, the F-150, and the Raybrig NSX. The GT500 Z is ignored because both players already have them.
For cars marked as Tradeable, both players select a tradeable car they want to trade (only one car can be traded at a time) using the Trade Cars option. For instance, if player 1 choses Ferrari F2007 as the car to be traded and player 2 choses Bugatti Veyron 16.4 '09, the F2007 is removed from player 1's collection and is added to player 2's collection; the opposite also occurs with player 2's Veyron.
In both cases, the player must select the same garage number from the succeeding Pit Row screen. It is possible to trade cars online using applications such as adhoc Party for PlayStation Portable (for the PlayStation 3) and then connecting the PSP to the network created by the application. (These applications can also be used to host GTPSP multiplayer races over the Internet.)
Gran Turismo 5[]
- The online feature disclaimer, along with the Defunct Online Features category, pertain specifically to this section.
Trading in GT5 were done by using the Gift button when viewing a car in the garage; it is also possible to gift other items such as paint chips, horns, or driver outfits by highlighting them in the Items menu, pressing Triangle, and selecting Give to Friend. Items could be sent to anyone who is part of the player's PSN friend list, and will be removed from the player's garage/item list when sent. Because the system was meant to send items as a gift first and foremost, for it to be a proper trade, the player must have an arrangement with another player so they will, in return, send the required item to the player (only one item can be sent for every 24 hours; as of version 1.07, this is done at per-console and per-IP address level, meaning if there are multiple registered PSN accounts on one console, only one user can gift an item per day).[2] If the player is a recipient, items could be picked up in the Car Delivery (for cars) or Items (for non-car items) option in the menu.
Some traders would seek for cars in "0/0/0" condition, referring to the car's lack of mileage, switches, and modifications, especially for rare Standard cars from the Used Car Dealership or the Online Collector's Dealership.[3]
DLC items, including pre-order items and gifts received from GT Academy events, cannot be sent to another player. Additionally, because of high-stakes nature of such trades/gifts (many players have reported scam cases where the other player did not send an item that was part of a trade/gift agreement), version 1.07 imposes a restriction preventing cars worth over Cr. 1,000,000 from being gifted to other players in any form; players were directed to use car loan system introduced in the previous update for such cars. (The restrictions were temporarily lifted following the update's release between February 28 to March 3, 2011).[2]
As GT5's servers has been shut down in 2014, items can no longer be sent to, or received from, other players.
