Description[]

1994 witnessed a newborn 3-cylinder naked motorcycle that Triumph introduced as the "Speed Triple". Originally a naked version of the Daytona 900, this model's exterior panels were removed to display a tough and very sporty attitude. A naked version of the Daytona T595, the Speed Triple T509, was then produced in 1996. Its distinctive dual headlights set the tone for its appearance, and it became the prototype for the present model. The bore was increased in 1999, giving a 955cc displacement. The T509 was given a high-pressure crankcase casting in 2002, but the chassis dimensions were the same as the older model's, with its focus on maneuverability.

Then came 2005. Triumph increased the Speed Triple's engine stroke and increased its displacement to 1050 cc. Though they stayed with the same basic body dimensions and frame, inverted forks equipped with radial-mounted calipers were installed and the styling was completely remodeled. Gone were the bikini fairing and lower cowling of the old model. With upward-pointing mufflers jutting out to the left and right, and a seat with its chopped-off rear end, the Speed Triple was reborn as a short, compact, low, simple, yet bold, custom-looking, almost Italian-type bike with an aggressive overall image.

With a light clutch and easy shifting, this new Speed Triple was refined for increased stability in handling. But it is also spartan with its styling. The riding position, which requires extending your arms in order to grasp the wide handlebars, is typically aggressive. The thick, rolling torque reaches 90% of peak at 3,300 r.p.m. and carries that power all the way up to 9,000 r.p.m. Responding immediately to the touch of the throttle, that torque seems to continue building even beyond the peak mid-rev range.

And, naturally, because the Speed Triple was built on the basic chassis of the Daytona 955i, its cornering performance excels and its character as a true street fighter is absolutely unmistakable.
