"With a cute silhouette and a rear-engine layout, it is an icon in commercial car history."

The Volkswagen Type 1 was a car that was loved by the entire world, given nicknames like the Beetle and the Bug over the years. The people's car, designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, had a cute rounded silhoulette recognised by many, and was powered by an air-cooled four-cylinder engine mounted at the rear, making it a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car. It holds a record of 21 million cars produced from 1938 to 2003.

The Volkswagen 1200 is the official name of the main line-up, powered by a 1.2 L engine, produced from the mid 1950s to the late 1960s.

Out of these, the 1966 model is of particular interest to many. Until this year model, the electrical systems of the car used a 6-volt battery, and was nicknamed the 6-Volt in some countries. Due to this feature, the 6-volt is the last model that is conidered to be truly vintage by many. From 1967 the electrical system was upgraded to a 12-volt system, and the headlights were in an upright position, making the car more modern.

Among Beetle enthusiasts, there is a strong affinity for models up to 1966 that have a milder look due to the angled headlights. This has caused these models to command a premium price in recent years, and there are sometimes newer Beetles that have been modified to give it the 6-Volt or Vintage look.

The 1,192 cc engine mounted in the 1200 first appeared in 1954. Though a 1,285 cc was made available in 1965, and a 1,493 cc apeared in 1966, its production continued into the latter half of the '70s as the basic model. Of course improvements were made over the years, boosting the initial 33 BHP to 39 BHP towards the end of production.

This is a little car that made a big splash in automotive history. Designed as a functional civilian car by none other than Ferdinand Porsche... Its distinctive shape led to it being nicknamed the 'Beetle'. Boasting a manufacturing history of over 60 years, the Type 1 was a true enduring classic... With 21,529,464 units rolling off the production line from the 1940s to the early 2000s.

Did you know that the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 911 have some common linkages? The Beetle was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of Porsche Automobiles. It sports a horizontally-opposed engine at the back of the car that drives the rear wheels... Making it—precisely!—a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car! Dr. Porsche carried design elements from the Beetle over to the first Porsche sportscar, the Porsche 356... And later the Porsche 911. So what started out as a small people's car ended up as a genuine sportscar. Now while there may be a world of difference between the two... the fact that they share a horizontally-opposed engine, RR-layout and the same inventor is truly fascinating!
