In-game description[]
"The origin of the people's car, the beloved bug of which over 15 million cars were produced."
Just before World War II, the German government had initiated a plan to create a car for the common people, and commissioned the brilliant engineer Ferdinand Porsche for its design. However, not a single one of these vehicles made their way into the hands of the public. Though the government had encouraged people to invest in a special fund from which they could later purchase a KdF[1], and built a factory in Wolfsburg using the money they had gathered, the factory never produced a civilian passenger car. It churned out military vehicles instead.
At the end of WWII in 1945, about 80% of the factory in Wolfsburg was destroyed in air raids by Allied Forces. The factory was in such a sad state that the British forces managing the site considered it not even worth dismantling for scrap. But as there was a need for cars in the post-war reconstruction, the production of the KdF was restarted at this factory. It was this KdF produced for the British military that would later go on to become the Volkswagen Beetle. The "people's car" that the German people had been waiting for all throughout the war years finally beeped its horn.
Its "Beetle" nickname (German: "Käfer") from its resemblance to the humble insect, was bestowed in the 1950's when they were exported to the United States.
The Beetle's basic design was essentially unchanged from the pre-war Kdf. A rear-mounted, 1,131 cc air-cooled 4-cylinder engine producing 25 BHP and 49.2 lb-ft of torque drove the rear wheels.
Officially called the Volkswagen Type 1 (or Standard), the car continued to evolve over time, and became a passenger car that came to be sold worldwide. In 1972, after 27 years in production, it broke the production record of the Ford Model-T, with a cumulative total of 15,007,034 cars built.
