"A powerful Golf combining a 3.2 L V6 with 4WD."
Volkswagen introduced the R series starting with the RSi version of the New Beetle. This R32 is the second "R" to be introduced, and of course the letter stands for "Racing". The R series is a premium sports car, much like the M series of BMW.
While the GTI shifted towards a more gentle character, the R32 was a wild beast in terms of performance. The 3.2 VR6 produces 238 BHP, a full 90 BHP above the GTI. A front wheel drive layout was no longer adequate with this much power, and it was combined with the 4MOTION AWD system. This is an on-demand 4WD system that utilized a Haldex coupling, which transmits torque to the rear wheels when the front wheels start to slip. The large 18-inch tires also gives it the truly sporty look.
The VR6 with an extremely narrow angle of only 15 degrees hits an exhilarating exhaust note at high rpms. You can enjoy the sound and engine feel thoroughly with the 6-speed MT, or rely on its abundant torque for a lazy cruise. If you want to get serious however, it does 0 to 62 mph in just 6.6 seconds.
Even so, it does not focus on just being sporty. The 160 kg addition from the GTI and the 4Motion gives it more stability, and it has high touring capabilities. The 0.7 inch lower sports suspension is still comfortable, and maintains the car flat on the road. It became possible to incorporate a quick ratio steering wheel, only because of this incredible stability. Although the Koenig bucket seats are sporty, it makes the interior very classy as well.
