In-game description[]
"A concept supercar demonstrating the brutality of a 12-cylinder W engine."
Volkswagen pulled an ace out of its sleeve when it introduced the W12 concept at the 35th Tokyo Motor Show in 2001. Despite its super exotic look, what intrigued engineers was the engine: a W12, whose 12 cylinders were arranged in three-cylinder banks forming a "W". In the Coupe concept, this powerplant was mounted amidships.
Although this engine saw use in the company's luxury sedan, the Phaeton, it was transformed into an entirely different beast for the Coupe.
Power for the 6-liter unit was rated at 591 BHP at 7,000 rpm and 457.6 lb-ft at 5,800 rpm. This allowed the large 2-door to accelerate like a true exotic, and reach a top speed of 217 mph, which it actually did at Nardo, a high-speed test track in Italy. The W12 Coupe maintained a record-breaking average speed of 200 mph over a 24-hour period, and set six world records and 12 class records.
The W12 Coupe's styling is, in a word, graceful. Penned by renowned designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign fame, the W12 Coupe possessed the classic lines of Italy's exotic cars, while maintaining the serious nature of German vehicles. Among its features are gullwing doors and a sporty-yet-distinctive face.
Unfortunately, the W12 Concept never made it to production, but many enthusiasts are still waiting. Its timeless design and incredible performance makes it indeed a timeless piece of machinery.
