In-game description[]

"Here's another world-famous Volkswagen—the 'Camper', as it's lovingly known. Officially designated the Type 2, it is based upon the Type 1—better known as 'the Beetle'. This RR vehicle utilizes an air-cooled flat-four-cylinder engine. The reduced engine profile allows for plenty of cargo space. With tuning parts being widely available, this vehicle is a joy to drive."
―In-game description of the car, from GT7's Used Car Dealership

"A camper van-styled vehicle that maximizes internal space with minimum body size.

The Volkswagens created by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche had a plethora of ideas packed in the small bodies, as well as infinite possibilities. The cars were developed into a variety of variants, from off-road cars for battlefields, to sports cars like the Porsche 911.

This Samba Bus is an example of its transformation into a van with a large luggage space. Because the engine is mounted in the rear in the same manner as the old Volkswagen Beetle, the nose is extremely short. With the flat horizontally-opposed engine, the floor of the luggage room is also lowered, and is a classic example of the Volkswagen methodology in attaining the maximum space in a minimum body size.

The actual height of the car is relatively low at less than 1600 mm, and it is said this is because they did not want to raise the air resistance with a high height. Still, because the floor of the car was very low to the ground, it had more space than its rivals, and it was also very high in cost performance. Its small turning radius, thanks to its short wheelbase, and the versatility of its compact size, also gave it a lot of advantages as a commercial van.

The round headlights and the rounded front end design were practical but cute in appearance, and are often used as a motif of other custom cars. Volkswagen is well aware of the important image of the Sambabus, and has already introduced this in taller concept cars of this segment.

Trivia[]

  • This is the oldest car to appear in the Used Car Dealership in GT7.
  • Its flat sides makes it a popular choice for Livery Editor artists to use it as a "canvas" for artworks, even if they are not meant to be raced.
    • Additionally, its rear wing layer is used for its roof; the Mini-Cooper 'S' '65 also features a similar behavior.
  • In GT7, this car is the most prominent subject of a humorous physics glitch found in Update 1.49, where it could often be seen bouncing around violently in a bizarre fashion (even in menus and Scapes Movies) under extreme suspension settings. This was fixed in Update 1.50, although similar problems continued to persist on certain 4WD cars (mainly Mitsubishi Lancers) to a lesser but noticeable extent; most of the persistent issues were largely resolved by version 1.54.
