"Indicating the new design direction of Volvo; an ultra-fast saloon professing to be a 4-door coupe."
The S60 debuted in 2000, replacing the S70 as Volvo's mid-size saloon. Appearing along with the V70 estate as a poster child for 21st-century Scandinavian design, the S60 represented a clean break from the drab boxiness of previous generations of Volvos.
The exterior was stylish enough for Volvo itself to call the car a '4-door coupe.' More amazingly, because of cutting-edge design that shortened the bonnet and pushed the cabin forward as much as possible, not one iota of interior comfort was sacrificed.
Variations are all developments of the transverse inline 5 cylinder engine with different dispositions. The basic grade is a 2.4L in two versions, one that produces 138 BHP and a second that produces 168 BHP, while the premium grade's 2.5L low-boost turbo set-up distinguishes itself with robust torque. But the image leader of the S60 line-up is the sports-grade T5 Sport, featuring a specialised engine different from both other grades.
The T5 Sport is given a high-pressure turbo with displacement actually reduced to 2.3L. While high-powered with 247 BHP maximum output, this engine is more notable for offering its maximum torque of 243.8 lb-ft over a wide rev range. The associated gearbox is a 5-speed automatic, and tyres are wide, 225/45 R17. The T5 Sport has a presence reminiscent of Volvo racing cars raced in the European Touring Car Championship.
The car is a super GT that can perform high-speed manoeuvres in comfort. It feels safe to drive, as though its considerations for safety have been heightened along with its increase in speed. This high-speed Scandinavian sports saloon compares well with the best German-made saloons.
