Description[]
The ultimate street sports bike, the YZF-R1 was literally reborn from the ground up from its 2004 model with a view towards participation in the World Superbike Championship (SBK). The frame was provided with greater longitudinal stiffness using feedback from the M1 MotoGP machine to deliver more stability and control from braking to turn-in. With the shortest stroke in its class, the stock engine throttles sharply to 13750 r.p.m. and propelled the YZF-R1[1] to three major victories in 2004-the FIM World Endurance Championship, the AMA Superstock Championship and the European Superstock Championship.
However, more than speed on the track, the R1 was primarily developed for enjoyable handling on the street. But it was often in hard-fought struggles in the top SBK (World Superbike) and Japan Superbike (JSB) categories.
Using such battles as a catalyst, the speed and fight of the R1 was quickly increased the following year. The R1 bike from YSP & Presto Racing, the top team directly under Yamaha, corralled two wins in the first half of 2005 and an excellent time of 2 minutes 9.033 seconds for 5th place in the Special Stage at the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance round of the FIM World Endurance Championship. Unfortunately, a spill caused by unseasonable weather resulted in a 12th place finish in the actual final but these results still sufficiently underlined the R1's ability.
That Suzuka 8 Hours machine was produced with JSB-class standards, which have a stricter modification policy than the SBK class. Its noteworthy points include the box-shaped right swing arm and greatly improved stiffness. It was supplied with Kayaba front and rear suspension, and the now-standard radial-mounted monoblock Brembo calipers on the front brakes. And in an especially simple configuration that emphasises utility, the fuel tank and forward airbox are fully covered and specially formed for greater capacity.
The sharp weight control displayed by the R1 riders at the Suzuka 8 Hours speaks to the level of dependence that's placed on the rider, and that's one of the interesting charms of the YZF-R1.
