Description[]

Yamaha proved the engineering brilliance of its 4-stroke Genesis concept bike in the form of the FZ750 and FZ250 Phazer. Inclining the engine forward 45 degrees allowed a low centre of gravity and made it possible to set the carburettors on top of the engine and incorporate straight intake tracts for high combustion efficiency.

Introduced in 1986, the FZR400 carried on the Genesis concept, adopting the highly rigid aluminium "delta box" frame inherited from Yamaha's motorsports racer. In parallel with their 2-stroke, 250cc replica bike, Yamaha released a high-spec machine with a direct lineage to their works racer for the 4-stroke, 400cc replica market, where intense development competition had involved almost all motorcycle manufacturers.

The result was an even more heated battle between manufacturers for market share based on performance in town and on winding roads. Intense competition also spread to such series as the production-based SP and the TT-F3 races.

Modified for racing, this FZR400 is powered by the stock engine but with upgraded intake and exhaust parts and the same Digital Igniter ignition system used in the racing version. Upgrading both the fork inner parts and the rear suspension unit tightened up the handling, to securely convey the 67 hp of top-end power at 12,000 r.p.m. to the road.

Acquistion[]
