The Yamaha MT-01 is a naked bike loaded with an air-cooled, overhead-valve, 1670cc, 48-degree V-twin engine based on that of the XV1700 Road Star Warrior performance cruiser. As a mass-production machine, this is the world's largest-displacement V-twin sports bike, with amazing low-end power. Engine revs are a low 2300 r.p.m. in 5th gear at 60 mph. In addition, since 98.6% of maximum torque is generated at this level, lightening the flywheel and other changes compared to the Warrior changed the engine characteristics throughout its rev range.
The aluminium CF die-cast twin-spar frame uses four rigid mounts to convey the engines "pulsing" feeling—the main development concept—directly to the rider.
Two large-diameter exhaust pipes that run right up next to the seat and tighten up the rear view are a symbolic presence on the MT-01. Titanium silencers were adopted in order to reduce weight and a version of Yamaha's patented EXUP exhaust system made especially for the V-twin engine was installed in order to more easily handle the massive torque. The large body size is not unexpected from Yamaha, and it's difficult to say that this bike is "light" in any sense of the word. The riding position offers a slightly forward-leaning posture with the seat on the high side, but the slim body still secures solid footing for the rider. Start up the engine and, as can be anticipated from a twin, an extremely coarse pulsing is conveyed, both audibly and physically.
Get moving, and what's amazing first and foremost is the terrific acceleration. It isn't like the muscle of a high-revving litre-class sportbike. But before you even realize it, you'll simply have reached an incredible speed even though the engine is nowhere near redline. And since the heavy, massive bass emitted from the exhaust always reaches your ears, you'll enjoy the sound regardless of the speed. Although you can taste its generously overflowing flavour at a touring pace, surprising handling and performance is demonstrated when taking curves at high speeds. A depth of spirit that responds to all of the self-centered desires of each and every rider is the essence of the MT-01. This is one twin sports that simply doesn't have the word "boring" in its lexicon.
