Description[]

As Japanese manufacturers began to make a name for themselves around the world and expand into the development of large four-stroke engines, Yamaha bucked into this trend and released its RZ250, once again proving the sportiness of two-stroke machines.

The air-cooled, two-stroke engine technology that Yamaha had long cultivated was further evolved to a liquid-cooled unit that exhibited a top-end power of 35 hp at 8,500 r.p.m. Yamaha also adopted such racing details such as the first cantilevered Monocross suspension on a road-going sport bike, which was also used on the TZ production racer.

This racing-spec RZ250 features modified suspension and brakes, further improving on the sportiness of a motorcycle that was one of the key instigators of the two-stroke replica boom in Japan.

The front fork is from a TZ250 production racer, obtaining a heightened sense of stiffness and excellent damping characteristics. The front brakes are equipped with 300mm diameter stainless steel floating discs and 4-pot calipers, effectively strengthening the bike's stopping power. The cantilevered rear suspension was also upgraded to a high-performance unit.

The stock engine remains, but with re-shaped intake and exhaust ports. Also, the carburettor and racing chambers were changed to produce greater power, and the radiator from the TZ250 was installed.
