Description[]

The TDM debuted in 1992 as the pioneer of what were known in Japan as "Alps road bikes" —big machines appropriate for all settings from city streets to winding mountain roads.

That original model lifted the liquid-cooled, dual-overhead-cam, 5-valve, front-canted, parallel twin motor from the XTZ 750 Super Tenere and installed it onto a twin-spar frame, and then bored the engine up to 849cc. To improve traction, an uneven firing order was implemented in 1998 through the use of a 270-degree crank instead of the original 360-degree component. At the same time, the fairing and other exterior parts were refined, the overall dimensions were changed, radial tyres adopted, and other changes implemented as well for greatly enhanced looks and performance.

After undergoing a full model change, the current TDM, now dubbed the TDM900, boasts an increase in displacement to 897cc while carrying on the basic form and 270-degree crank of the previous model. Yamaha then adopted an electronic fuel injection system to improve fuel economy without sacrificing rideability. A dual-shaft balancer was also added to reduce vibration, and ceramic composite-plated cylinders were adopted for their excellence in durability and resistance to overheating.

Design-wise, the impression is of size and a high center of gravity, but this bike feels surprisingly light when getting on and turning, and the slim, upright riding position makes urban riding fairly comfortable. Its easy to see why the TDM900 is popular in such European cities as Paris and London.

Emphasising the low- to mid-range speeds through quick response, the engine delivers the pulsing of a twin. Gripping the road surely, the specialty of this bike is in the brilliant handling that sharply tracks your intended line. It may be hard to imagine from its exterior look, but the TDM900 gives you the feeling of being one with the bike, and this becomes even more enjoyable the more you ride it.

The combination of 18-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels with the easy ride brought by the suspension's long-travel setting promises low fatigue even after long rides, and even when riding two-up. Excellent handling in urban settings and unwavering speed for touring—the TDM900 achieves both.
