Description[]

The average scooter has an integrated engine, exhaust system, drive train, and swing arm in a configuration known as a unit swing system. This is perfect for maintaining low cost and efficiency of space, but brings with it major disadvantages in terms of unsprung weight, rigidity, suspension travel, and front-to-rear weight distribution. That's why it's hard to consider this system as being the most appropriate for a large-scale scooter that aims to deliver high speeds.

Yamaha overcame problems related to the standard scooter design and acquired greater power by using a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, dual-overhead-cam, 4-valve, parallel twin-cylinder, 499cc motor and by paying careful attention to its mounting position. Comfort was secured through a vibration-reducing horizontally-opposed reciprocating balancer. The engine was placed at the centre of the chassis to achieve a low center of gravity, ample running stability, and high handling performance. As a result, the TMAX has a 47:53 front-rear weight distribution, something simply unthinkable in conventional scooters.

The crank's centre journal was abolished to thoroughly slim down the engine, allowing a steep 50-degree lean angle. In short, the TMAX greatly exceeds the conceptual framework of conventional scooters. In fact, Yamaha insists that this is not a scooter but an "automatic sport" model.

This concept is evident in the chassis as well. Unlike a standard scooter, the TMAX uses a motorcycle-type telescopic front fork, with a conventional (for a motorcycle) steering head with dual triple clamps. This is much more rigid than a typical scooter setup, and gives the TMAX a road-hugging feel, even on the high-speed and winding roads of Europe. Its powerful performance stimulates the rider far beyond earlier concepts, demonstrating a ride quality that approaches that of a sports motorcycle.

An electronic fuel injection system that improved power and driveability brought this top-selling ride an even more evolved engine. By further stiffening the front fork and adding dual disc brakes, radial tires, and a tachometer and parking brake, Yamaha brought the TMAX even closer to perfection. Even now, the TMAX boasts a large following.
