A liquid-cooled, dual-overhead-cam, 4-stroke, 4-valve, inline-twin cylinder 499cc engine with balancer; a steel-truss frame similar to those employed on sports machines; a front fork that's supported with both top and bottom triple clamps; the sports-machine-level 47:53 front-to-rear weight distribution and 50-degree lean angle. However you look at it, the Yamaha TMAX is a new sporty commuter bike that simply doesn't fit into the category of "scooter".
During revamping in 2004, fuel injection was added, the fork tube diameter was increased, and the front brakes were converted to dual-disc. Aiming at a sportier feel and more road-holding stability, the wheel sizes were expanded to 14 inches in the front and 15 in the rear.
The TMAX with racing-tailored specifications employs a single seat cowl, a sharp finish around the rear, and new parts for the front fork's inner workings and the rear suspension. The result is style and performance that are truly suitable for sports riding.
The fuel injection program was modified to suit the new mufflers and to obtain superior exhaust efficiency. Driveline system parts were changed as well, and settings were made that focused on recovery from out of corners.
