Description[]

Though it's actually an off-road bike and has its roots in the 1987 TW200, the Yamaha TW225 became a popular custom-street model and a bestseller in the 250cc class. With an engine based on the air-cooled, 4-stroke overhead cam, 2-valve, single-cylinder 196cc unit in the XT200, the TW225 was further equipped with an electric starter and carburettors that would run without trouble even at high altitudes. With its peculiar style from a very fat 180/80-14 off-road rear tyre and small fuel tank, more than anything else, this machine appealed to riders with its strong presence.

In response to the popularity of that TW model, an "E" type without a small fairing over the instruments and with small, roundish headlights was added to the lineup in 1998. This model also featured frosted black rims and miniaturised turn indicators. In 2000, the front was equipped with disc brakes for more braking power, and street tyres were installed on both the front and rear to decrease tyre noise.

It was in 2002 that the TW200 evolved into the TW225, with an engine taken from the Zero 225. A decrease in rideability caused by the need to comply with exhaust emission regulations was dealt with by increasing displacement and developing TW-specific settings. The exterior was given a new rear design, and greater emphasis was placed on a road-bike feel.

With excellent balance and a light, slim body, the charm in the TW225's styling made it seem as though this machine could easily handle even treacherous settings like backwoods trails, and this diligence by Yamaha unmistakeably gained a great deal of support for its ease of handling on the street.

Though its hard to say that the engine is powerful, it does possess the strength necessary for pleasurable street riding. The fat tyres don't require any special handling ability either, and you can ride the TW200 like you would any other motorcycle. The wide-ranging convenience that allows you to take this bike as-is on woodland paths is still attractive even now.
