Description[]

It was in the autumn of 1985 that the 2-stroke "Quarter Sport" bike labelled the TZR250 made its appearance. The Yamaha RZ250 that was introduced in 1980 had created a motorcycle boom and, as factory machines such as the 1983 Suzuki RG250 Gamma began to strengthen their racing performance, Yamaha, taking up the challenge, placed engineers from their racing department in charge of developing the TZR as a genuine racer replica.

The TZR enjoyed the effectiveness of its YPVS exhaust valves and, in terms of technology, simply overwhelmed its competition. However, as those rival bikes improved as well, Yamaha's woes returned with the 2nd-generation TZR that debuted in 1989. Using the same parallel twin cylinder engine, power characteristics from the exhaust system were so extreme that handling at low and medium speeds was poor. Because of this, all of the positive aspects of the 1st-generation model went to waste.

However, the 3rd-generation TZR that arrived in 1991 was equipped with a V-type engine and was much more characteristic of a two-stroke Yamaha. With a carburettor positioned for each cylinder, front and back, and a primary balancer, this bike displayed stable revs and a smooth torque rise from the lower end, with its forte demonstrated from 8,000 rp.m. on up to its limit of 12,000 r.p.m. Handling was also improved for greater raciness and suitability for speedway participation. The result: a truly Yamaha-like exciting ride was regained.

1992 featured a downsizing of parts and the perfecting of the electronic controls. The standard TZR250R was joined in the lineup by the racing-spec TZR250R-SP and the TZR250RS, with its dry clutch and fully adjustable front and rear suspension, for street use.

In 1995, however, this lineup was once again unified into the one TZR250SPR model with a composition that integrated a three-way YPVS exhaust with one main slide-valve exhaust port and two drum-valve sub-exhaust ports, for an even more polished performance. While adhering to SP specs, without a close-ratio transmission, consideration was placed on general riding and the TZR250 achieved a level of perfection befitting its final model year.
