Description[]

In its 1994 debut, the XJR1200 used a modified version of the FJR1200's air-cooled, dual overhead cam, 1188cc inline four-cylinder powerplant. With its feeling of overwhelming torque and sense of stability, the XJR1200 soon grew into a top-selling model. In 1998, the displacement was expanded to 1250cc and reliability was improved through such advanced technology as sleeveless electroplated alloy cylinders, forged pistons, and carburised conrods, effectively evolving this machine into the air-cooled XJR1300 that would become, at the time, the world's largest-displacement mass-production naked bike.

This XJR1300 was lightened by almost 20 lbs. in 2002, with a focus on its mechanical underpinnings. The tank and seat were redesigned for greater appeal to a wider range of riders. With its comfort and excellent rideability, this XJR1300 had a unique feeling that rivals simply couldn't deliver, and that's why it grew in popularity.

In 2003, lightweight wheels from the FZS1000 were added, the suspension was further lightened, and the muffler configuration was changed in order to control noise. The 43mm front fork and rear Ohlins shocks were both fully adjustable and the suspension was set to handle a variety of riding conditions. Changes to the graphics were then implemented in 2005, including white pinstripes on the sides of the rims.

Hop onto the XJR and the first thing you'll notice right off is its low, comfortably-fitting seat. The footpeg position and distance to the handlebars make for a nice, compact riding position. Start up the quiet, air-cooled engine and get running. You'll feel the quick manoeuverbility, and the suppleness of front and rear suspensions that move smoothly at any lean angle, and the highly satisfying feelings of both the stable chassis and neutral handling.

Reacting linearly to operation of the throttle, the fun of that strong and steady pulling from low and mid-range revs is still a characteristic particular to the XJR. The excellent controllability and sharp touch of the front brakes (all the way up to their locking point) is another great attraction of this bike. Rather than cornering that relies on heavy rider input, the XJR1300 simply delivers a ride with efficient turning ability, making this an excellent tool for learning the basics of motorcycle riding.
