Description[]
Yamaha introduced the YZF-R1 in 1998, built not as a racer replica, but as a supersport bike with the basic goal of providing an enjoyable ride on winding roads, with a high performance potential. After undergoing major remakes every two years, the 2004 YZF-R1 was fully remodelled into a 1000cc bike with a view towards competing in superbike events.
Even then, though displaying improved track performance, Yamaha continued to pursue excellence in handling rather than absolute speed. This R1 was designed so that the rider would want to ride it as much as possible. The fairing wraps around the chassis instead of covering it, and the exhaust is positioned beneath the seat. Serious power is expressed via both the large-volume ram air duct and the underseat muffler that roars like a jet.
The engine has the shortest stroke in its class and displays true high rev characteristics, reaching peak horsepower at 12,500 r.p.m. and redlining at an amazing 13,750 r.p.m. Typically, a slight power valley is evident in the midrange, especially around 7,000 r.p.m., but the sense of acceleration from there on up to redline is nothing less than spectacular. Throttle response is exquisite as well, and makes the rider want to open up the throttle even more.
Yamaha's experience with its MotoGP machine—the YZR-M1—delivered the know-how to create a frame with high longitudinal stiffness. With improved cornering stability, the R1 accurately follows the intended racing line. Feedback from the road is rich indeed, both front and rear, and the standard Yamaha monoblock calipers make front braking wonderfully controllable.
It's easy to plant your feet, the riding position is comparatively comfortable, and the throttle response is smooth and linear. While the YZF-R1 offers excitement, its real charm comes from the fact that it's truly rider-friendly.
