Description[]

After the displacement allowance for 4-cylinder engines in the World Superbike Championship (SBK) was increased to 1000cc, bike manufacturers began striving for higher circuit performance in the 1000cc supersport category as well.

Although developed with supersport racing in mind, the YZF-R1 has consistently displayed solid speed on public roads. In fact, one of its main features is that it allows the rider to enjoy the fun of handling a sports motorcycle. A complete redesign in 2004 improved the bike's racing performance in a major way.

Having the shortest stroke in its class, the engine displays a character predisposed for high-range revs. Knowledge gained from the YZR-M1 MotoGP machine was incorporated into the frame, giving it heightened longitudinal rigidity, excellent stability for entering corners, and the ability to transmit abundant feedback from the road.

This racing-customised model has further extended those characteristics by lightening both the front and rear suspensions and wheels, and exchanging them with much stiffer pieces. The front and rear brakes were also replaced with higher-spec models.

In addition to a titanium muffler and its excellent exhaust efficiency, there is also a racing-type computer system for managing such engine functions as intake and timing. These improvements boost output to 187 hp at 12,500 r.p.m. Through all of this, the YZF-R1 has a level of performance that prevents it from being grouped with bikes designed merely for speed on public roads.
