Description[]

Appearing in 1999, just 1 year after its big brother YZF-R1 staked its claim as a high-performance street-legal litre-class sport bike, the YZF-R6 was given the task of challenging its class in supersports production-bike racing. This debut served to light a fire under supersport racing and led to the appearance of a number of strong rival machines.

The R6 has a friendly side, and its compact design is the one attribute of this bike that's most apparent. But rather than being a scaled-down version of a 750cc bike, this is a scaled-up 400cc. So, although it's equipped with a super-high-revving motor that fanatics will love, this is one motorcycle that is easily acceptable to entry-level riders as well.

The YZF-R6 was given a full makeover in 2003, getting a unique suction-piston fuel injection system and achieving 50% greater stiffness from a 2-piece high-pressure frame casting. The 2005 model, based on that 2003 version, displays excellent potential and a high level of perfection through inverted forks and a front tyre with an aspect ratio raised from 60 percent to 70.

While the 2003 model may have lost the impression of being a super-high-revving bike by reinforcing the power in its low and mid-range, the 2005 YZF-R6 once again returned to expanding the high range. Though taking curves is most fun between 7,000 and 10,000 r.p.m., the best traits of this bike just begin to appear around 10,000 r.p.m., and the powerful acceleration continues until the torque peaks at 12,000 r.p.m. With output improved by 3 hp and the redline set at 15,500 r.p.m., there's absolutely no sense of lethargy. The maximum speed performance of the YZF-R6 can easily be considered to be the best of all 600cc class motorcycles.

Control has been improved as well through the use of the upside-down forks and radial-mounted calipers. Its cornering ability—totally under the rider's control—represents true Yamaha know-how.
