The Yoshimura GS1000R YOSHIMURA XR69 '80 is a tuned racing bike produced by Suzuki Motorcycles, and upgraded by Japanese tuner Yoshimura. It only appears in Tourist Trophy. It is exclusive to the PAL version.

In real-life, this bike claimed victory in the 1980 Suzuka 8-hour endurance race with riders Wes Cooley and Graeme Crosby, completing a total distance of 200 laps, 40 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor. This gave Yoshimura their second win in the Suzuka 8 Hours.

Description[]

At the first Suzuka 8hr Endurance Road Race in 1978, Yoshimura rode a Suzuki GS1000 (tuned to AMA Superbike Race specifications) to victory, out-performing the Honda RCB, which had been considered unbeatable in the European endurance circuit. Two years later in 1980, the Suzuka 8hr Endurance Road Race became part of the Worldwide Endurance Circuit. This motivated the various manufacturers to put works teams in place, intensifying the competition. Yet despite such efforts, it was Yoshimura who once again came out on top in 1980 - this time on the GS1000R Yoshimura XR69.

Although the bore and stroke on the GS1000R engine is the standard 70 x. 64.8mm, the compression rate has been brought up to the maximum level. Furthermore, the Yoshimura piston is unique in that the piston pin is offset on the exhaust port side. An innovative mechanism has been applied, whereby heat is emitted when the piston presses against the cylinder, preventing the engine from overheating. For the carburettors, Keihin CR31s - hand-polished on the inside - were selected.

The frame, manufactured by Suzuki factory, was especially made with endurance in mind and reflected the cumulative technology and experience of the then successful Suzuki works racer and RG series. Of the three engine mounts, the front side was rubber-mounted so that the vibration would not cause cracking in the frame. A special version of the 40mm diameter anti-nosedive front fork that was used on the GP Racer RGB was set especially for the GS1000R. For the rear shock, a Kayaba with reserve tank was selected while for the aluminum swing arm, different sub-frames were used for the left and right. Also worth noting are the 18-inch Dymag wheels at the front and rear, which have been equipped with bias-type slick tyres made by Dunlop.

This machine is also known for the record 200 laps that Graeme Crosby and Wes Cooley rode to defeat the rival Kawasaki team in what ended as a very close race indeed.

Trivia[]

  • Although it competed in the Suzuka 8 Hours race, it is not considered as a "special" machine much like its 2005 counterparts, likely due to year reasons.
