Created in 2001 under the guiding concept of combining the cornering performance of a supersport bike with a Katana exterior, the Yoshimura Katana 1135R is a phantom-like naked bike. Only five were ever sold.
Based on the 2001 Final Edition Katana that, as the name indicates, was the Katana's final model year, Yoshimura took that stock machine, painted the exterior a uniform lacquered black—including the engine and frame—and employed special parts all the way down to the smallest of details to give me 1135R an amazing feel that the original just doesn't have.
Yoshimura reinforced the frame in 14 places using the know-how gained from the Katana bikes that the customiser raced in the big NK-1 class naked-bike races of the mid-1990s. The swing arm was also transplanted from that NK-1 racer, with a truss-type reinforcement added underneath, and the Yoshimura logo was carved onto the gusset. The FFVS fork was reset like the 43mm-diameter upright unit on the 2001 GSX-R 600. The horizontal rear suspension featured Ohlins shocks built specially for the 1135R. The 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels and tyres on the original Katana were both converted to modern 17-inch spec, with radials fitted on forged, lightweight mag wheels.
Engine displacement was expanded to 1135cc with Yoshimura 74-mm-diameter pistons. Other tunings included porting, ST-1-spec cams, 40mm Mikuni TMR-MJN carbs, and a handbuilt titanium exhaust. These modifications boosted power to more than 150 hp.
With its weight reduced by a full 100 lbs and wheelbase shortened by 30 mm (about 1.2 inches), the tightened 1135R chassis offers sharp handling that's simply out of this world, making it easy to handle and make full use of that 150 hp-plus output. The 1135R is the ultimate Katana bike crafted by Yoshimura.
